The remit for this commercial project at The Cavendish Hotel in Bournemouth was to create more space around the sides and rear of the building with paving slabs. The space to the rear was excavated to provide a private, sun lounger patio level with the back door which was surrounded by a retaining wall of timber sleepers.
The timber sleepers were also used to wall the entire pathway and extended next to the patio to create large planting boxes with pygmy palm trees planted along the edge. Steps to the side path and lawn area were also built using sleepers and paving slabs to provide easy and convenient access to all areas of the grounds.
The old lattice and concrete panels used to divide the garden were removed to open up the grounds into an open plan format and provide more space.
This garden presented a particular challenge due to the very steep slope and existing concrete steps. We terraced the garden using railway sleepers and clad the existing steps with decking.
The client did not want a handrail blocking the view over the bay so we fitted lights around the outer edge of the deck as a safety feature at night.
